South Carolina Physician Receives Outstanding Achievement Award

Recognized for Leadership, Service, and Improving Medical Care for Patients.

Raleigh, NC – Patricia Witherspoon, MD, from Columbia, SC, has been awarded Constellation Quality Health’s Timothy Llewelyn, MD, Memorial Award in recognition for her outstanding achievements in the medical field and dedication to quality health care for patients. Constellation Quality Health President and CEO Steven Martin and Board member Jeff Perkins announced the award along with a $5,000 check during the South Carolina Medical Association’s (SCMA) Board of Delegates meeting on April 26, 2024. Dr. Witherspoon is donating the $5,000 check to the SC March of Dimes.

Dr. Witherspoon has been in practice for more than 20 years and serves as Clinical Associate Professor of Family and Preventive Medicine Family and Preventive Medicine at the USC School of Medicine in Columbia, SC. She is recognized for her commitment and achievements in women’s health, minority health issues, health disparities, diabetes care, community health, and health care advocacy on both the local and national level. Her long list of accomplishments includes receiving the 2023 Annual James E. Clyburn Health Disparities, Health Equity Leadership Award and the 2022 Advancement of Women in Science and Medicine Award, University of SC School of Medicine.

Dr. Witherspoon is a member of the Investigation Team at the SC Rural Health Research Center, Office of Rural Health Policy; the SC Cardiovascular Task Force; the SCMA; and the Volunteer Physician Work Force at the Columbia Free Clinic and the Good Samaritan Clinic. She received a Doctorate in Medicine from Pennsylvania State University College of Medicine, a Master of Science in biology from Pennsylvania State University, and a Bachelor of Arts in biology from Lincoln University, PA.

“Dr. Witherspoon exemplifies the highest standards of excellence in medicine and patient care,” said Martin. “We are proud to present her with the Llewelyn award for her tireless efforts in patient care and community advocacy to improve social determinants of health.”

Established in 2015, the Llewelyn Memorial Award honors the life and memory of one of Constellation’s long-serving board members, Timothy Llewelyn, MD, for his decades of service to the South Carolina medical community and many other professional, civic, and community activities.
